East End Newcastle is transforming a prominent stretch of Hunter Street into one of the city’s most vibrant residential, retail and hospitality destinations. Developed by Iris Capital, the major multi stage precinct forms a significant part of the ongoing revitalisation of Newcastle’s city centre, helping to reinstate Hunter Street as a traditional high street and reconnect the eastern end of the CBD with its historic commercial core. The broader precinct has been positioned as a catalyst for Newcastle’s renewal, combining new homes, hotel accommodation, public realm improvements and an activated retail offer across a four stage master plan.

The first stage established a lively urban village anchored by QT Newcastle, the Hunter Region’s first Woolworths Metro, casual dining, laneway activation and a curated mix of lifestyle retail. Together, these elements have helped create a more walkable, day to night precinct that supports residents, workers and visitors while bringing renewed energy to Hunter Street and the surrounding laneways. Subsequent stages extend this vision, introducing additional specialty retail, hospitality and residential uses, with stages three and four set to deliver a significant new public plaza, further casual dining, specialty retail and improved pedestrian connections through the precinct.

Working with Iris Capital, we contributed to the retail master planning of the precinct alongside SJB. Through this process, we supported the development of a retail framework that integrated hospitality, boutique retail, everyday convenience and lifestyle uses into the evolving master plan. Our work helped shape a retail strategy that responds to Newcastle’s local character, supports street level activation and reinforces East End as a distinctive, Newcastle centric destination within the city’s revitalised urban core.
