242 Exhibition Street is a prominent A-grade commercial tower in Melbourne’s CBD. Owned by Charter Hall and repositioned in collaboration with Architectus, the project transforms the ground plane of the building to create a more contemporary workplace arrival experience integrated with hospitality and retail.

Originally completed as Telstra’s global headquarters, the 47-storey tower occupies a substantial city block incorporating both a large commercial tower and a collection of adjoining heritage buildings with retail frontages along Exhibition, Lonsdale and Little Lonsdale Streets.

Working alongside Architectus and Charter Hall, we supported the adaptive reuse of the ground floor by developing various concept plans for the retail within the lobby. Our work focused on shaping how hospitality, café and social spaces activate the entry environment whilst opening the building to the street. The works were completed within a tight budget, showcasing how affordable adaptive reuse change the personality of large towers.
